Rowing in Motion is designed for maximum hardware compatibility so you can use it with the devices you may already have. Even though Apples’ iOS ecosystem has a farily homogenous hardware landscape, some Rowing in Motion features are not available on all devices. The first thing you should decide on is the screen size. You can choose between 3.5″ and 4″ displays offered by iPhones and iPods and the 7″ and 10″ displays offered by the iPad family. The Boat and Coach App adapt to the screen size and show different views on iPads to take advantage of their bigger screens.
| Boat App | ||
|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Recommended | |
| iOS Version | iOS 4.2 | iOS 5 |
| iPod/iPhone | iPhone 3G, no GPS on iPod | iPhone 3GS or better |
| iPad | all supported, no GPS on WiFi only editions | all WiFi + cellular |
| iPad Mini | all supported, no GPS on WiFi only editions | all WiFi + cellular |
The Boat App requires a device running iOS 4.2 at a minimum. This excludes the first generation iPhone, but literally every other device is supported. Due to the lack of a GPS Sensor in the iPod and WiFi only iPads, GPS related functionality (speed, distance, location) is not available on those devices.
A SIM card is not required to use Rowing in Motion on your iPhone or iPad.
Recommendations
We recommend getting an iPhone 3GS (or better) or an iPad Mini for the Boat App. The iPad Mini has the added advantage of Bluetooth LE, which we might use in the future to access external sensors.
